Upcoming bday party (not mine) [27 Jun 2009|01:41am]
[ mood | curious ]

What should I wear to a black and white party? Guests have been told that they know how to sass it up. I'm not sure I do "sass". What would other people wear to a "sassy" Black and White party?

Glancing through my list of friends on Facebook, I'm somewhat surprised to find I have a rather decent number of friends who are Republican leaning.

Not saying anything; was just surprising.

The first time it was a dead heat between Uhura and Picard. Odd mix, but can't really argue. I took it a second time to try to bring out more of the Captain. ;)

So, as I do monthly, I'm posting to remind everyone about Lucifer's Lounge Swing Night tonight. It also is May, so it is where I celebrate my birthday each year (well, for the last 3 years anyway).

Come on down to the Merc tonight, and join me for some fun! :D

Pour the Mt. Dew and raise a D20

Creator of Order of the Stick, Rich Burlew writes:
"After some confusing rumors and retractions, it has been confirmed by multiple sources that Dave Arneson passed away late on Tuesday, April 7, 2009.

Many of our younger readers may not know who Mr. Arneson was, but he was a pivotal part of the birth of the hobby we all play. By most accounts, he literally invented the very concept of role-playing games. While he would share official credit for the original Dungeons & Dragons rules with the late Mr. Gygax, Mr. Arneson was the first to take the Chainmail wargaming rules and run a game where players controlled a single character, rather than an army, and described that character's actions to a judge who would determine how the environment reacted to them. Pretty much every roleplaying game (and many computer games) can trace their lineage to this single idea. He also invented the first campaign world, Blackmoor, which is hardly surprising considering he invented the concept of campaign worlds in the first place. It is impossible for me to overstate the impact his games had on what would become our mutual hobby.

Sadly, there won't be the outpouring of mainstream condolences for Mr. Arneson that we all saw for Mr. Gygax. There won't be an AP obituary or celebrity commentaries. For better or worse, Mr. Gygax was always identified as the creator of the game in the eyes of the media. But while I never met Mr. Arneson, I hope you will all join me in remembering a man from whose mind sprung the critical innovations that led to the birth of role-playing games. D&D may never have become popular without the work of Mr. Gygax, but it never would have existed at all without that of Mr. Arneson. "

He made a tribute comic here

RIP Dave Arneson, co founder of D&D

Sorry, World. My bad. [27 Mar 2009|01:06pm]

"This crisis was caused by no black man or woman or by no indigenous person or by no poor person," Lula said after talks with the prime minister in Brasilia to discuss next week's G20 summit in London.

"This crisis was fostered and boosted by irrational behaviour of some people that are white, blue-eyed. Before the crisis they looked like they knew everything about economics, and they have demonstrated they know nothing about economics."

Challenged about his claims, Lula responded: "I only record what I see in the press. I am not acquainted with a single black banker."

According to the President of Brazil, my white haired, blue-eyed people are to blame for the financial crisis. Sorry about that!

Excellent, Smithers! [25 Mar 2009|06:57pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

I will be in Vegas, Sunday 3/29 - Wednesday 4/1.

Took some extra hours and focus to make sure it could happen, but I turned in the vacation request today. :D

This will be the first time I've been to Vegas "for real". Going down there for a friend's birthday thing. I'd been there on a couple family road trips when i was like...10...and a roadtrip in college consisted of us stopping there at night, going nowhere near the strip, parking in a parking lot and sleeping in our VW camper we were all in, getting breakfast the following morning in the casino we were next to, and then leaving. :)

So I don't really feel I've "been" to Vegas. Looking forward to it. :D

Man, I miss reading this book. :) [04 Mar 2009|01:31pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

If you are a fan of Science Fiction, and haven't had a change to read The Long Run by Daniel Keys Moran, you should do so. A friend introduced me to this book a while back, as it's his favorite book (and he's read a library's worth of books).

The problem really, is finding it. However, to simplify this, there is a PDF link for the book, that my well-read friend told me about yesterday!

The Long Run

This is a great book; I really can't recommend it enough. The story is incredibly well written, the world of the mid-late 21st century is wonderfully filled out and feels real, the dialogue is witty and clever, and the characterizations are top notch. I encourage you to read this book.

PDF links to his other books in that same line (Emerald Eyes, The Last Dancer) are also provided on the download page.

Tonight's schedule: Boredom. [15 Feb 2009|08:19pm]
[ mood | apathetic ]

Earlier in the week I was going to go to Finn McCool's tonight, but there's no school tomorrow, which means it would be super crowded, and filled with frat guys. Blech. Did that last month when there was a Monday holiday and that was just way too annoying. Was playing some cribbage with friends, and a group of frat fucks were hovering over our table, farting in faces to try and make us leave.

At one point, one of them, in a weak and uneducated attempt to make fun of us, asked me if I was playing Magic the Gathering. I actually had to stop what I was doing, I was so incredulous. "What?? Really?? Do these even LOOK like fucking Magic cards to you? Have you never seen regular playing cards before? Jesus!" That shut him up and he left us alone. I don't normally try to antagonize the frat crowd, especially when they are in a group, but...come on! Stupidest thing I'd ever heard.

So yeah, didn't want to do Finn's tonight. Fortunately, a birthday karaoke party was scheduled in it's place...but that was canceled, due to the birthday girl still getting over a really bad Avian-SARS thing...Happy birthday, [info]zannah! :( So now I'm just sitting at home watching TV, contemplating if I should (or even want to?) open a bottle of Night Owl.

Meh. Don't really want to stay home, but don't really want to bother going out either. At least I'm saving money, right? :/

Meh. [13 Feb 2009|08:16pm]
[ mood | depressed ]

Depression sucks. I hate how it just kinda lurks in the background, always kinda there, at least tolerable most of the time, but sometimes just leaps out of nowhere, in your face, like a hobo bothering you on the bus while you're trying to read. And I hate how it always brings me to the same thoughts about the futility of relationships. And no, it has nothing to do with Valentine's Day. Probably more to do with the tiny, dying kernel left of the naivety of my youth.

Wasn't like there was anything to trigger it. Just...suddenly, there it is.

Anyway...whatever. It'll pass. Always has, always will.

Other people, I swear.... [11 Feb 2009|10:32am]
[ mood | sleepy ]

I hate being a procrastinator sometimes. I'd really like to be motivated to get things done at the apartment, not because they have to get done, but because I want to do them. I have boxes that have still not been unpacked from moving in to this place 5 months ago. All of my pictures/posters/postcards/collectibles/knick-knacks --all those things that lend a personal touch to a place you live-- are still packed up, too. My bedroom is essentially just a storage area. Our living room was still full of boxes 3 weeks before Christmas.

But as I was saying...I'd like to be personally motivated to get these things taken care of, but I'm just not. Part of me just doesn't care, and I'm not sure why. Am I still mourning the loss of my cool Cap Hill apartment, and this is just a denial phase? I don't think so. Is it the fact that I have a roommate now, so I don't want him to feel like I'm taking over the place and claiming it as "mine!"? I doubt that, too...we aren't territorial, competitive guys, and we've been friends for almost 20 years. I don't know why I'm completely motivationless regarding the apartment.

But "Other People" sometimes get involved, which forces me to get things cleaned up. Tony's bday party pushed us into action and getting the place at least partially presentable. The Christmas Eve Gathering forced us to finish getting the living room, kitchen, and closets straightened up.

Now, this has happened to my bedroom. :) Regan's parents are over from Spokane, happening to be up in Bellingham for a funeral. They gave Regan a call yesterday evening, and when Regan suggested meeting them for lunch, they said they wouldn't have time, if they were going to make the pass. So he offered the living room to crash in, as we do have a futon pad for the occasional crasher.

However, I've known Regan's parents for as long as I've known him, and I know that his mom goes to bed earlier than the rest of us, which meant the living room just wasn't going to work for her. I gave it a few moments of thought, and mentioned to him that they could use my room, and I'd crash in the living room for the night. It just made more sense that way. They'd have a bathroom that they could use during the night if necessary, without having to come into the hallway, they'd be away from any TV noise or conversation, and I would be able to go to work the next morning without bothering them.

So yeah. Once again, Other People have forced me into getting part of the apartment situated, which in this case...made me clean my room. :)

Now, if only I could be forced to get all the personalizing touches done, maybe the apartment would feel more home-like.
